Rent is a rock musical with music, lyrics, and book by Jonathan Larson. Loosely based on the 1896 opera La bohème by Giacomo Puccini, Luigi Illica, and Giuseppe Giacosa, the storyline follows a group of impoverished young artists and activists in the East Village of New York City, navigating life under the shadow of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The narrative unfolds over one year, beginning on Christmas Eve, and centers on the struggles and relationships of roommates Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, and Roger, a musician dealing with a heroin addiction and his own HIV-positive diagnosis. Other key plot points include their love interests, their conflicts with their wealthy former roommate Benny who is now their landlord, and their friendships with a diverse cast of characters, all while facing challenges like poverty, homelessness, and gentrification.
